Schoelcher

Schoelcher is a French Town, located in the department of Martinique, in the region of Martinique (French Admin Division for Province). Its inhabitants are named the Schoelcherois and Schoelcheroises. Schoelcher is the 4th most populated Town in Martinique, after Fort de France, the Lamentin, and the Robert, it is also an University Town. It was named Case-Navire till the year 1889.

The town is on the Caribbean coast of Martinique, in the urban conglomeration of Foyalais, its climate is a tropical one.

First named Case Navire, the Town came to life as a result of the March 24th 1888 Law, that separated its territory from Fort de France & of the one of Case Pilote. Renamed Schoelcher by Presidential Decree on the 25th of November 1889, to pay tribute to Victor Schoelcher (1805-1893), the man who initiated the abolishment of slavery in France and its colonies. Schoelcher is typographed with an e in the o, by the Official Geographic Code COG, (Code Officiel Geographique) as well as in the INSEE and by the National Institute of Geographical & Forest Informations IGN (information géographique et forestière.)
